Digital Native or Digital Immigrant

At the Longworth conference Bill Raduschel opined on the Digital Native/Digital Immigrant divide that has been around since Marc Prensky penned his article in 2001.

What fascinates me is while the education world has discussed this topic considerably, my search on Google suggests that the technology world has been far quieter. Maybe I am dead wrong but I don’t see alot of current posts suggesting that this divide is a prime driver in the success of Facebook and others as a facsimile for community.

According to my college freshman daugther, the addiction of Facebook is the need to see what others have written about her in the last 15 seconds — to the point that she is starting to wean herself off of Facebook because it is so addictive.

As tech savvy as I might think I am — having owned every gadget possible, built my own website, etc. —  I do not share her desire to know and be known as much as she. Hers is a community of real-time, moment-by-moment information frenzy, much more akin to a Wall Street trading desk than anything else.

She is a very different consumer of information than me and the faster I get a good handle on how she processes information, the more successful my next venture will be.
